(Washington D.C.) November 22 – The African American Mayors Association (AAMA) today submitted a letter to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation to express its support of the nomination of Phil Washington to serve as Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Administrator. Mr. Washington’s exemplary record of driving transformative change will serve him well as the next FAA Administrator and AAMA urges the Senate to swiftly accept this nomination.
President Biden announced Mr. Washington’s nomination on July 6, 2022 and sent the nomination to the Senate on July 11, 2022. AAMA commends and supports President Biden’s nomination of this exceptionally qualified leader to be the next FAA Administrator. At a time when the Biden Administration is seeking to modernize our aviation industry through historic investments in our airports through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, having steady, proven leadership at the FAA is vital.
“President Biden has nominated an exceptionally qualified leader to be the next FAA Administrator in Phil Washington. Mr. Washington will bring an extensive record in managing highly complex organizations and delivering results,” said Denver Mayor Michael Hancock. “Having worked with him for over 20 years, currently, he serves in my cabinet as CEO of Denver International Airport, the third busiest airport in the world. He is dedicated, smart, and always prepared. He should be confirmed without delay.”
Mr. Washington has demonstrated extraordinary leadership and advanced diversity and equity throughout his accomplished career. AAMA believes Mr. Washington will be a welcome addition to the FAA.
“The FAA needs permanent leadership now, and Phil Washington is a proven aviation leader with the right administrative experience and focus on equity that I know aligns with what the Biden Administration is seeking in the implementation of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. AAMA enthusiastically supports his nomination, and he should be confirmed as soon as possible,” said Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott, President of AAMA.
