(Washington, D.C.) — Today, former Mayor Karen Weaver -- interim director of the African American Mayors Association and first Black woman mayor of Flint, Michigan -- issued a statement congratulating Tishaura Jones for her election win, making her the first Black woman mayor of St. Louis, MO.

“I would like to extend my deepest congratulations to Tishaura Jones for her election win, making her the first Black woman mayor of St. Louis. This is an incredible milestone. Our country has a troubling record of keeping Black people and women out of politics. Jones’ election is an inspiration and a reminder of the incredible leadership of Black women creating change across our nation.

“Mayor-elect Jones is a tireless advocate for civil rights, equitable health infrastructure, small businesses, and addressing the root causes of poverty -- and the African American Mayors Association is incredibly excited for the perspective and courage she will bring to help drive progress in St. Louis.”
