(Washington, D.C.) — Today, Mayor McKinley Price, DDS (Newport News, VA) -- president of the African American Mayors Association -- released the following statement in response to President Biden’s executive orders on racial equity.

“We applaud President Biden for keeping his campaign promise to prioritize racial equity. Today’s executive orders will go a long way toward advancing justice for people of color.

“We are particularly heartened by the administration’s order for the DOJ to refrain from renewing contracts with private prison operators. Private prisons profit from the mass incarceration of predominantly communities of color. With this executive action, we can start to break down our nation’s unjust incarceration system.

“As we look forward, we are enthusiastic to work with the Biden administration on other issues most pressing to Black communities -- including supporting HBCUs, closing the wealth gap, ending the digital divide, and police reform.”
