WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today Mayor McKinley Price, DDS, of Newport News, VA and president of the African American Mayors Association issued the following statement in response to ongoing protests associated with the killing of George Floyd:
“We are encouraged by the charges made agianst Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd . We must eliminate the racist tradition of white cops killing black people without cause in cities and towns across the nation.
“We know there is collective rage in our nation about the killing of George Floyd, and so many before him, that were killed at the hands of police officers with seeming impunity. One of our jobs as mayors is to help channel this rage into positive transformation for our communities. As such, we call on the citizens of Minneapolis and other cities to protest peacefully in the wake of further updates in this case. We also implore Americans everywhere to vote in every election, national and local, to elect fair and just law enforcement officials like Mike Freeman, who are committed to protecting everyone, regardless of race or creed.”
